BEIJING, March 11 (Xinhua) -- Top legislator Wu Bangguo and other Chinese leaders on Friday joined in panel discussions with deputies to the National People's Congress (NPC), the top legislature, during the NPC's annual session.
In a discussion with the NPC delegation from the southern province of Hainan, Wu, chairman of the NPC Standing Committee, said the NPC's work was at a new starting point.
He said more prominence must be given to revising and improving laws as well as enacting supportive statutes to help the socialist system of laws with Chinese characteristics keep abreast with the times.
Further, Wu said supervisory work must be more relevant to the overall situation and livelihood issues to facilitate the implementation of the decisions and arrangements of the central authorities.
Premier Wen Jiabao joined in a panel discussion of the NPC delegation from east China's Jiangxi Province, where he said that the development of the Poyang Lake eco-economic zone was of the most interest to him.
The restoration of Poyang Lake would be successful, as long as the authorities take the matter seriously, planning is scientific, measures are effective, and efforts are constant, Wen added.
Jia Qinglin, chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference, the top political advisory body, joined in a panel discussion of the Taiwan delegation.
Jia said that peaceful development should be the theme of cross-Strait ties, and cross-Strait exchanges should be pushed forward steadily to bring tangible benefits to the people.
He stressed that efforts should be made in the celebration of the 100th anniversary of the 1911 Revolution.
Li Changchun, member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee, attended a panel discussion with NPC deputies from southwestern Guizhou Province.
He urged local authorities to facilitate the development of public cultural service system and give full play to the role of the cultural industry in optimizing development structure, boosting consumption and creating jobs.
Li called on authorities to speed up the development of cultural industry with local characteristics.
While discussing with the Qinghai delegation, Vice Premier Li Keqiang urged the NPC deputies from Qinghai to tap into the province's peculiar advantages to develop major ecological and livelihood projects, and to strengthen resources development.
He Guoqiang, head of the CPC Central Commission for Discipline Inspection, told deputies from northwest China's Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region to enhance environmental protection, improve people's livelihood, and strengthen social management.
When joining in a panel discussion with legislators from the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, Zhou Yongkang, secretary of the CPC Central Commission for Political and Legal Affairs, urged authorities there to crack down on all separatist and sabotage activities in the ethnic region.
