OTTAWA, March 11 (Xinhua) -- A tsunami advisory was issued Friday due to the threat of a tsunami that may potentially produce strong currents in or near the water off Canada's west coast.
Dimitri Soudas, director of communications for Prime Minister Stephen Harper, said in a statement that the advisory issued for parts of coastal British Columbia:
"At this time it is believed that a low level tsunami has been generated that could impact marinas and other coastal infrastructure or create strong currents in harbours and isolated coastal areas," Soudas said.
Local governments were advised to activate their emergency plans and to immediately evacuate marinas, beaches and other areas below the normal high tide mark.
